Step Back in Time

Did you know that Arrecife isn’t the original capital of the island? Teguise, the village in the centre of the island, is the old capital.

Unlike its modern namesake, Costa Teguise, the coastal resort, the sleepy village of Teguise doesn’t have any sandy beaches to enjoy – but it has a huge part of Lanzarote’s history. Its position high and central position made for strategic importance during pirate invasions in the 1600 and 1700s.

As one of the oldest settlements in the Canary Islands, the buildings are fascinating, including the church, the plaza, the castle and even the small shops and bars dotted around the cobbled streets. It really is like stepping back in time.

You should sample some of the rustic, authentic tapas bars around the village. Walking around the village is extremely peaceful – although it does come alive every Sunday for a huge market. Bus tours, as well as cars full of visitors and locals alike embark on the small village. The market is packed full of craft style, handmade products and various local goods.

So, if you like the hustle and bustle or mooching around for a bargain, be sure to visit on a Sunday, or if you prefer the tranquillity and a gentle visit to a few bars visit any other day (possibly not a Monday as some of the local bars may close for a day of rest after the Sunday market).
