Testing rules finally eased

The complex traffic light system is being axed, in favour of a smaller red list. Gone will be the traffic light bingo. Lanzarote will remain a good option for your holiday, firmly away from the red list.

From Monday 4th October at 04:00, double-vaccinated travellers arriving in England will not need to take a pre-departure test before their flight. This removes an enormous barrier, as many people had feared testing positive whilst overseas on holiday.

Later in October, the Day 2 PCR test is being replaced by the cheaper and more convenient lateral flow test. The government has stated it intends to introduce this by the end of October, in a boost to families returning home after half-term holidays. If your Day 2 lateral flow test is positive, you will be able to take a confirmatory PCR test for free.

The devolved governments of Scotland, Wales and Norhern Ireland are expected to follow, given the practicalities.

More to follow soon.

Update: Whilst the Scottish government has confirmed it will adopt the changes to the country traffic light classification, it is not removing the need for a pre-departure test or Day 2 PCR.
